In addition to her role as a full professor at the College of Nursing, University of the Philippines-Manila, Dr. Cora Anonuevo is one of the Philippine Nursing Research Society's board directors and its national treasurer.

She monitors the financial administration of the Society and report to the
Board on its state of financial health. On a more detailed side, she oversees internal management accounts and keeps financial resources so that they are properly controlled and economically spent.

She also manages the Manila office (located at her UPCN Room 330) of the Philippine Nursing Research Society.

4th NNRC Post-Conference Update

Our conference continues to be a truly national conference on nursing researches as we had just concluded our fourth edition at Hotel Stotsenberg, Clark, Pampanga last November 18-19, 2011.

This conference was coordinated by Dr. Al Biag of the College of Nursing, Holy Angel University in Angeles City and ably supported by Dr. Aldrin Darilag, Noriel Calaguas, Jeanneth Sarmiento, Jeannie Maria Idio, Jenalyn San Luis, Gloria Vergara, Lucila Sunga, Karen Amaba, Edwina Basco, Paolo Lumanlan, Wilma Tumalian and Doroteo Dizon

Two hundred eleven delegates coming from Laoag to Zamboanga actively participated in the event.

Notable nursing leaders and researchers were seen in this conference. Among them were: Prof. Lydia Manahan and Dr. Lourdes Tejero (both of UPCN), Dr. Femy Octaviano (TUA), Dr. Grace Bello (WVSU), Prof. Michael Dino (OLUF), Prof. Janelle Castro (UERM), Dr. Yolly Arugay (BON), Dr. Cindy Leigh (ACU), Dr. Mila Llanes (UST), among others.

Interestingly, poster awards through the modest sponsorship of REBC Partnership/Beta Nu Delta Nursing Society went to entries from Far Eastern University (1st Prize), Our Lady of Fatima University (2nd Prize) and West Visayas State University (3rd Prize). The winners brought home certificates, cash awards, publication bursaries, and books.

Thank you very much for all your support and your efforts to making the 4th NNRC another worthwhile event, and we hope to see you all at the 2012 Conference.

University of Cebu College of Nursing- Host for 1st PNRS Student Conference in Cebu

The University of Cebu College of Nursing, both Banilad and LapuLapu-Mandaue Campuses, dressed out its inclination to drag nurse & student researchers all over Cebu. With the theme “Rediscovering Research: A change in one’s perception”, the very first Philippine Nursing Research Society student conference in the province was launched last March 17, 2011. After being inducted as secretary last November, University of Cebu's Research advocate Dr. Rosielyn D. Tan, along with the league of dynamic PNRS officers of Cebu Chapter, lighted the idea of choosing UC as host for the exodus of the national organization’s freshest milestone.

With keynote speaker, Dr. Donna Lou Evasco Neri, Research Director of Liceo de Cagayan University, students from Cebu Doctors’ University, Cebu Institute of Technology, University of the Visayas, and Benedicto College, mopped up UCLM’s Audio Visual Room. Abstract posters presented by clinical instructors and students were notable as judges toured around and examined the meat of their researches and expertise.

At the tail of the event, victorious winners were the delegates from Cebu Doctor’s University who bagged 1^st and 3^rd place, while nursing students from University of the Visayas throned the 2^nd spot. Needless to say, it was a day on the calendar to be marked on; a chance for the collaboration of the faculty and the students to intellectually meet at both ends.

Young PNRS Member Won Best Poster in Intl Conference

Centro Escolar University (CEU) researchers' Stimson F. Agustin, Jr., MSN, RN; Paul Allen Gabriel Tablico, MAN, RN, Pamela Blanche Daga-Lago, RN, Dyan Ibalio, RN; Bernice Caliwagan, RN, Ralph Flores, RN authored the research poster entitled, “Understanding Fetal Demise From Filipino Adolescent Mothers: A Lived Experience”, which won first place in the “Etchel Neri Paragas Best Poster” competition at the 1st Cebu International Nursing Conference in Cebu City last April 26-27, 2011.

The authors’ research focuses on “after fetal death experiences” of adolescent mothers since they have different mental and emotional stage compare to young adults. The study used the qualitative phenomenological research design because of its holistic value in which it openly explored, comprehended, analyzed and illustrated the feelings of adolescent mothers. The study concluded that, the emotional effects of pregnancy loss are important factors to deal with.

Mr. Agustin is a member of the Philippine Nursing Research Society Inc. Last November 2010, he presented a paper in the 3rd National Nursing Research Conference in Iloilo.

Dr. Denise Polit Hits Manila!

Dr. Polit was in town a week ago and gave a series of seminars in nursing research for professionals and students.

Denise is an American researcher who is recognized worldwide as a leading authority on nursing research. She has written textbooks on research methods for graduate students who are learning how to do research, as well as for undergraduate students who are learning how to understand and critique nursing studies.

Dr. Polit has published many articles in top-tier nursing journals, including International Journal of Nursing Studies, Nursing Research, Journal of Nursing Scholarship, and Research in Nursing & Health.

Two (2)officers of the Philippine Nursing Research Society Inc. presented in the recently concluded First International Conference on Qualitative Research in Nursing and Health(QRiNH) at Wiang Inn Hotel, Chiang Rai, Thailand last 1-3 December 2010.

Dr. Erlinda Casro-Palaganas of UP Baguio - Institute of Management (National President of Philippine Nursing Research Society Inc.) presented a paper on "Learning with communities: Structure and mechanism for reproductive health program among indigenous people of the Cordilleras". While Dr. Cora Anonuevo of UP College of Nursing (currently the national treasurer of the Philippine Nursing Research Society Inc.) presented a paper on "Qualitative data analysis: Establishing validity or
trustworthiness"

Dr.Anonuevo also presented a poster entitled, "Are we really a caring society? A Filipino perspective".

Qualitative research promises the quest for better understandings of human experiences. It complements the search for effectiveness and the practice of measurement from a quantitative paradigm thus making the care we deliver more
humanistic and holistic.

There are many opportunities from the First International Conference on Qualitative Research in Nursing and Health (QRiNH). This was
a platform where nurse researchers have advanced the use of qualitative research in the practice and education of nursing and health related fields. It was also an occiasion to discuss future regional links in qualitative health research.

Hopefully, the 2nd international conference will be held in the Philippines on 2012!

WVSU Hosts 3rd Annual Conference of the Philippine Nursing Research Society

West Visayas State University's College of Nursig was the proud host of the third Annual Conference of the Philippine Nursing Research Society.

On November 18-19, 2010 the city of Iloilo welcomed the participants of the third Annual Conference of the Philippine Nursing Research Society. This year's conference, titled "Reflexivity in Nursing Research," was sponsored by West Wisayas State University College of Nursing and the Philippine Nursing Research Society (PNRS).

In a welcome message to conference participants, WVSU President Dr. Pablo Sobong, Jr. said: "Iloilo and WVSU is proud to welcome nursing professionals who play such an integral role in ensuring the health and well-being of our families and our communities." He thanked the WVSU College of Nursing for hosting this forum which provides an opportunity for nursing professionals to network and share research findings."

Conference highlights also included a keynote speech by Prof. Fatima Castillo of the University of the Philippines Manila. Her talk was titled "Qualitative Research" There were several special plenary sessions. One addressed Writing for International Publications, with Dr. Thomas Harding, Phenomenology and Grounded Theory (Dr. Irma Bustamante), Feminist Research (Dr. Cora Anonuevo), Ethnography and Participatory Action Research (Dr. Erlinda Palaganas), Historiography (Dr. Cindy Leigh in behalf of Dr. Imke Fishcer).

The conference included fun events as well. The business meetig provided an opportunity to honor new research cells/chapters of Iloilo and Cebu.

Three (3) nurses and their teams received the poster awards for the professional category. There are also two (2) student nurses from Ifugao State University and West Visayas State University who received their poster awards.

Dr. Anonuevo's Attendance to 2 International Events

PNRS National Treasurer--Dr. Cora Anonuevo-- was in the active educational circuit for the first quarter of the year. She went to Fukuoka, Japan last February 27 to March 4, 2010 along with Dr. Marilyn Lorenzo. They have undertaken a series of focus group discussions among the first batch of Filipino nurse and caregiver candidates (this is the term used) under the Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement (JPEPA). They were joined by research partners from Kyushu University.

Later, she presented a research poster at the ICOWHI International Conference on the theme "Cities, Women and Health" held at the Penn Hilton Inn last April 7-10, 2010 at Philadelphia, PA. In one of the photos, she was with Afaf I. Meleis, PhD, FAAN, currently the Council General of the International Council on Women's Health Issues (ICOWHI) and Dean of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.

This initiative is part of the Society's capacity-building efforts to introduce nursing research in various areas in the country. The Jolo event is one such example for the Society to reach to its grassroot membership.

In an ever changing health-care environment, nurses must be ready to guide change and demonstrate leadership through research. As nurses strive to deliver quality care that is evidence-based, the profession will need competent and knowledgeable leaders to ensure quality outcomes in organizations and communities.

The Philippine Nursing Research Society, Inc. (PNRS) and the Association of Deans of the Philippine Colleges of Nursing (ADPCN) with support from the Global Nursing Symposium Series of the Beta Nu Delta Nursing, USA, collaborated a nursing research symposium with the theme: “Creating a More Positive Work Environment for Nurses and the Nursing Profession through Research."

This symposium showcased what nursing leadership is doing now and must do in the future to achieve that goal.

PNRS Research Forum: The Phenomenon of the Very Elderly

Manila, Dec 13 - The Philippine Nursing Research Society held a forum on "The Phenomenon of the Very Elderly" last December 10, 2009 with Prof. Grethchen Kelly, RN, Ph.D as speaker. This was held at the Philippine Nurses Association Auditorium. Dr Araceli Balabagno, Secretary of the Philippine Gerontology Nurses Association, gave the response dwelling on the Philipine Scenario of the Older Persons.

Though the audience was small, there was an active interaction and sharing among the participants during the Open Forum which included, among others, Dr Rusty Francisco, Dean Thelma Corcega, UST Associate Dean Mila Llanes, PGH Chief Nurse Ester Panaligan and an Indonesian PhD student .

We are very pleased that the Philippine Nursing Research Society has finally come to fruition as an offshoot to the 1st National Nursing Research Conference (General Santos City) and we have just concluded our successful 2nd National Nursing Research Conference (Cagayan de Oro City)

Truly, nursing research has come to age in the Philippines. Aside from the Society just being incorporated (SEC CN 200831557) and now enjoys a legal status, we also make sure that collaboration among nurses researchers in the country must be heightened at this point of time. So the natural inclination is to have our presence felt -- virtually.

We now have our official website at http://www.philnurses.net.

Definitely, this site will be a major resource for nursing research stakeholders in the Philippines. We would like to envision it as a work-in-progress.We hope that you be of help to the growth of this Society in the near future.
